Pope Francis notches new first: TV evening talk show guest

There is still a first time for everything, even if you’re Pope Francis. Francis was asked to make an appearance as a talk show guest for a television show in Milan. Francis spoke of things such as personal friendship as well as migration issues. Francis was interviewed by Fabio Fazio, the host of a popular Italian Sunday night talk show on Rai state television.

The pontiff has participated in various interviews in other forms of media in Italy and other countries. However, this was the first time he was interviewed on a popular talk show. This talk show has millions of regular viewers.

Francis referenced the consistent obstacles with the humanitarian ships that save migrants from traffickers in the Mediterranean. They are denied by surrounding countries to port.

“Each country must say how many migrants they can take,” Francis said, advising more harmony between nations for those who are longing for a better life somewhere in Europe. “This is an internal political problem.”

Pope Francis appears on the television show "Che tempo che fa," broadcast on Italian network Rai 3.

In the interview Francis rementioned his hopes requests and hopes that migrants would be invited and joined into society.

Fazio mentioned the stress of whether Russia may invade Ukraine and the effects that has on Europe. Francis did not entertain the gossip and commented “war is always destruction.”

The interview then took a lighter turn where they talked about his love for music and records. He visited a record store in Rome. Francis explains how he enjoys classical music, as well as tango numbers. This traces back to his roots in Buenos Aires. Someone “who doesn’t dance the tango isn’t from Buenos Aires,” Francis kidded.

With the talk of his home, he recalled that as a young boy he thought about becoming a butcher. This was inspired by his family’s local butcher who wore a belt that had money moving around in the pockets.

They moved on to talk about Francis’s friends and relationships. He was asked if he ever felt alone or if he had friends. Francis said he needs friends and has them. He states that they are “few but true.”

Pope Francis’s normal regards are made by saying “Don’t forget to pray for me.” In the conclusion of this interview, he said to those who don’t pray, “at least send me good thoughts, I need the closeness of people.”
